What is a lactation room?

A lactation room is a private space designed for breastfeeding or pumping. Federal law in the U.S. requires many employers to provide one for lactating employees, but public lactation rooms are more hit-or-miss. They may be called lactation rooms, mother's rooms, family rooms, or wellness rooms.

Good lactation rooms usually have a door that locks, a comfortable chair, an outlet, and a sink nearby. The best ones also include a changing table, dim lighting, and a fridge for milk storage.

What are Mamava pods?

Mamava pods are freestanding, self-contained lactation suites you often see in airports, stadiums, museums, and shopping centers. They unlock via a free app, have built-in lighting and a bench, and are cleaned on a schedule. If you've seen a sleek, pod-shaped lactation room in public, it was likely a Mamava.

Where to look first

• Airports: Most major U.S. airports now have dedicated lactation rooms or Mamava pods past security.
• Big-box retailers: Target, Walmart, and some grocery chains have family restrooms or lactation rooms.
• Malls & shopping centers: Check near the food court or customer service desk.
• Museums, zoos, and libraries: Many have quiet, private family rooms.
• Hospitals & medical centers: Often have clean, accessible lactation rooms.
